DIPPING NAILS / NAIL RESIN SYSTMEM – (Study Guide)

Why You Should Learn About the Nail Resin System
  • Nail resin and fabric systems are excellent for repairing cracks or breaks in the natural nail.
  • Color dip systems are very popular salon services.
  • Great option for special occasions because they are easy to remove.

Definition
Nail Resin System: Products that include nail resin to build strength and structure over natural nails or nail tips.
Nail Resins: Made from cyanoacrylate, a colorless liquid acrylate monomer that acts as a strong, fast-acting adhesive.
  • Viscosity: Measures the thickness or thinness of a liquid.
    • Thin viscosity: Better adhesion, faster curing time, used as base resin.
    • Thick viscosity: Known as building resin, used to build or as a topcoat.
  • Some resins require a resin accelerator (activator) to cure faster.

Resin Accelerators / Activators
  • Purpose: Speed up drying time of the resin.
  • Forms: Brush-on, pump spray, aerosol.
  • Can be used before or after resin application.

Benefits of Nail Resin
  • Excellent adhesion to the nail.
  • High durability.
  • Can be used on natural nails or tips.
  • Easily removed by soaking or wrapping in acetone or product remover.

Nail Wrap Systems
Definition: Any method using fabric or paper to provide nail strength and durability.
Used for repairing, strengthening, or tip application.
Types of Nail Wraps:
  1. Silk Wrap:
    • Thin, natural material with tight weave.
    • Lightweight, smooth, and translucent appearance.
  2. Fiberglass Wrap:
    • Very thin synthetic mesh with loose weave.
    • Allows resin to penetrate for better adhesion and clarity.
    • Sold in swatches, rolls, or pre-cut pieces.
  3. Stress Strip:
    • Small strip (⅛ in / 3.12 mm) of fabric applied across stress line (where free edge meets nail bed).
    • Used to repair cracks or splits in nails.

Maintenance
Regular maintenance is essential to keep nails balanced and strong.
  • Maintenance: Service after 2+ weeks of growth.
  • Fill: Add enhancement product to new nail growth.
  • Rebalance: Correct apex placement to restore strength, shape, durability.
Wrap Maintenance Schedule:
  • 2 Weeks: Buff and add resin to new growth.
  • 4 Weeks: Add additional fabric and resin.

Dip (Powder) System
Definition: Resin + polymer powder system where the resin absorbs the powder, forming a hard coating over the nail.
  • Dip powders are very fine, heavily pigmented polymers.
  • Different from acrylic (liquid & powder) systems.
Dip System Components:
  1. Nail Dehydrator / Bonder (#1)
  2. Base Resin (Gel Base #2)
  3. Dip Powders – color, clear, natural, pink, white
  4. Activator / Sealer (#3)
  5. Top Resin (Gel Top #4)
  6. Cuticle Oil (#5)
  7. Brush Cleaner (#6)

Dip Service Procedure & Sanitation
  • Perform a manicure before dip service.
  • Avoid dipping multiple clients into the same jar — unsanitary.
    Options:
  1. Pour-over method: Pour color over resin (lighter coverage).
  2. Use disposable small dishes for each client.
Application Cautions:
  • After each dip, gently tap or brush off excess powder with a soft brush.
  • Wipe brush clean before returning to bottle.
  • Contamination causes resin to become thick or stringy.
  • Apply 2–3 color layers if needed.
  • Apply Activator (#3) to dry layers.
⚠️ Important: Never apply Gel Base (#2) over wet activator — brush will harden!
If hardened, soak brush in brush cleaner (avoid acetone; it melts nylon bristles).

Finishing Steps
  1. After shaping and buffing:
    • Rinse hands (no soap).
    • Apply thin coat of Activator, wipe with lint-free cloth.
    • Apply 2 coats of Top Resin (#4) to all nails.
  • Service typically lasts ~14 days.
  • No LED/UV lamp required.

Pink & White Service
  • For clients who want extensions without colored powder.
  • Apply tip, overlay with clear or natural powder, then polish.
Color Powder Fills:
  • Same color: perform a regular fill.
  • Color change: nails must be soaked and removed first.
