NAIL TIPS & FORMS – (Study Guide)

Purpose & Importance
  • Many clients seek professionals for nail corrections and lengthening.
  • Creating longer, stronger nails is among the most popular services.
  • Proper prep and application ensure durability—improper work causes lifting or pop-off.

Key Concepts
Nail Enhancement vs Nail Extension
  • Enhancement: Any product applied to the natural nail to increase strength or beauty (overlay or added length).
  • Extension: Increases nail length using a tip or form.

Preparing the Nail
  • Natural nails contain keratin layers that act like a sponge—must be clean & oil-free.
  • Dry Manicure: Performed before enhancement to prepare cuticle/nail plate without soaking.
  • Any residue (cuticle, oil, dust) causes lifting.
Steps:
  1. Buff around cuticle & sides (lateral folds).
  2. Scrub nail with Nail Cleanser (contains Isobutyl Alcohol).
  3. Apply Nail Dehydrator (Butyl Acetate)—removes oil/moisture for ~10 min.
  4. Do NOT touch nail afterward—moisture/oil ruins adhesion.

Nail Tips
  • Made from Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) plastic.
  • Used to add length/support for overlays.
  • Without overlay, tips break easily.
Important Parts
  • Well: Shallow depression that contacts nail plate.
  • Position Stop: Where natural free edge meets the well.
Types of Tips
  1. Full-Well: Covers most of the nail plate.
  2. Partial-Well: Covers part; more natural.
  3. Well-Less: No well, no position stop.
  4. Full-Coverage: Press-on, temporary.
  5. French Tip: Pre-cut smile line.
Sizing & Fitting
  • Must cover sidewall-to-sidewall perfectly.
  • Too small → pressure & cracking.
  • Too large → uneven edges & lifting.

Nail Adhesives (“Glue” / Resin)
  • Made from Cyanoacrylate.
  • Thin = fast (≈ 5 sec dry); thick = slow.
  • Apply 1 drop inside the well; press gently to remove air bubbles.
  • Safety: keep away from face; wear eye protection.
  • Heat from nail speeds setting.
  • Use Tip Cutters only (designed to avoid pressure cracks).
  • Blend the tip with a flat medium-grit file—never at an angle to prevent damage.

Nail Forms
  • Alternative to tips; used to sculpt extensions beyond fingertip.
  • Requires more practice for accuracy.
Types
  • Disposable: Paper/Mylar with adhesive back.
  • Reusable: Plastic or aluminum (clean/disinfect between clients).
Advantages
  • Custom-fit to each client’s natural nail → more natural look.
  • Saves time (no tip sizing/blending).
  • Apply one finger at a time for precision.

Common Nail Shapes
ShapeDescription
SquareFlat top with sharp corners
SquovalStraight sides + rounded corners
RoundMimics cuticle curve; slightly tapered
OvalTapered to soft rounded tip
AlmondTapered to a fine point
StilettoLong, sharply pointed
BallerinaLong, tapered with square tip (like pointe shoe)
Tip vs Form
  • File basic shape before blending when using tips.
  • With forms, sculpt directly to final shape.

Proper Structure & Balance
Stress Area / Apex (Arch)
  • Located where natural nail becomes free-edge.
  • Needs extra strength → apex is the highest point (center oval shape).
Thickness Guideline
  • Base, sidewalls & tip = thin (credit-card thin).
  • Apex = slightly thicker for strength.
  • Underside = smooth, even, uniform length.
  • C-Curve: follows natural nail (~35%) for strength, like a bridge or egg shell.
